Ich sehe auf dem Bild Bäume in einem Wald. Das Bild wirkt herbstlich.

I see trees in a forest in the picture. The picture has an autumnal feel to it.

This image immediately appealed to me because it reflects my life over the past 15 months as I cared for my mother. Dark clouds were always hanging over me because everything could change from one minute to the next. But there were also moments or hours when the sun came out, moments that were simply a gift. However, the overall mood was that of the image—rather gloomy.

The image resembles a painting in warm natural tones, immediately creating a connection to the soul. Sunlight breaks through a forest (vertical image) or, somewhat less convincingly, the shore with a bright sun above it is reflected in a lake. In both cases, the bright spot of light, which is attributed to the sun, determines where the top is.

For some reason, the painter Lyonel Feininger comes to mind, although he constructed his paintings much more with geometric shapes.

This stirs a vision of an ancient race...spectral figures moving quietly through a forest heavy with mist. Their forms are barely visible, half-dream, half-memory, as if they are walking not just through the land but through time itself. The trees honour their passing; the air hums with old knowledge. It feels like a moment where past, present, and what might yet be all exist at once.

Changing the orientation changes everything. Turned one way, I see fields stretching into the distance...that same sense of a moment caught in time. A small red butterfly drifts through it, captured three times in flight, as if moving not just through space but through time itself.
Upside down, the butterfly rises, caught in an invisible updraft, climbing into the light. Turn it once more, and the field returns, the butterfly tracing its path in the opposite direction.
But it’s the vision of the ancient forest that stays with me...those misted figures moving through the trees, timeless and slow, as though the world itself were remembering.

What I find most interesting is that sense of timelessness...the feeling that every era, every heartbeat, exists at once. The longer I spend with it, the more I see: the small red butterfly rising through the ancient forest, and the faint shapes of those figures moving through the mist. They seem to walk through time rather than space, their shadows stretching softly across the ground.
There’s something hopeful in it...as if both the butterfly and the figures are moving toward light, carrying with them the quiet promise of something wondrous just beyond our knowing.

It would sound like the faint rustle of leaves in a dawn breeze. The air would taste cool, touched with the sweetness of dew and the faintest trace of smoke from something long extinguished. The scent would be that of wet earth and moss, mingled with a whisper of woodsmoke.

Other pictures come to mind...Turner’s storms and burning skies. There’s something of Caspar David Friedrich in it as well (The Dreamer and The Cemetery Entrance come to mind) as it has that same quiet reverence for the unknown, the solitude of standing at the edge of time.

My first thought was of an ancient forest...the earth remembering itself, the air heavy with stories that never quite ended.

In our best moments we were like two trees rooted deeply glimpsing into the bright lights

I see a dense forest of tall, narrow birch trees, with sunshine penetrating the branches and illuminating the leaves. The forest floor is covered in autumn leaves, some still clinging to the branches in shades of yellow and gold, whilst the forest floor is shades of orange and red.
Rotated, the image looks like the bank of a river, or sea coastline, with evening sun reflecting from the sky onto water. It looks to me like two rows of trees with buildings between them, two of which look as if they are on fire, clouds in the sky and reflections in the water. Right and left rotations appear like mirror images of the same picture.

I prefer the 'portrait' image. I personally love trees and this image makes me feel as if I am in the centre of the forest, and makes me smile.

Again I love the play of light, and the contrast between the darks and light. This image suggests texture and movement - a living landscape.

Looking into the trees, I smell the damp forest floor, wet leaves, and sap. I feel the breeze on my face from the movement of the branches, and hear them whisper to one another. My feet crunch in the fallen leaves, my steps quiet, as they are cushioned by moss underneath. There is a slight creak as the trunks move and I hear birdsong in the tree tops. I am alone with nature.

I think of the dense birch forests of Northern Europe when I look at this image. The birch trees in Russia come to mind, and a painting called 'Autumn Birches' by Leonid Afremov, has similar colours and light. Not the same, but a taste of it.

My first thought was 'Oh, lovely! Trees!', and the colours are fabulous!

I really like the transitions between the colours.

It makes me think of a painting of woodland I own which hangs in my study.

The woods are lovely dark and deep, but I have promises to keep and miles to go before I sleep.

Portrait - Walking though the woods. Sunlight - peace.
Landscape - Fields, hedges, unusual sky. Reflection on August/October. Trees turning brown - winter sky.

Both orientations are interesting. Country. Calmness.

I like the light in both. (In portrait - faces on the right hand side are not human)

    Smell - Autumn leaves (portrait)
    Countryside (Landscape)

My first thought when I saw it was that there is hidden evil on the right hand side.

It makes me think of Lord of the Rings. Lots of forest and a wonderful ethereal light. It's magical!

The thing I find most interesting is the play of light. The dark and shade and the ethereal nature of the air.

When I look at it I smell that earthy, leafy smell along with moisture. The leaves create a canopy which makes it quiet so I can hear the sound of walking. The sound your feet make as you walk in the forest. Interestingly, when I look at it I can't hear any birds.

The other thing this makes me think of is being in a subterranean cave. The lines in the middle make me think of stalagmites and stalactites and the light reminds me of the fluorescence you find in caves.

I saw it and thought 'Oooh. A forest!'.

A wood at sunset or sunrise...probably sunrise. In portrait, I see thin tall trees with the sun just coming through making the other trees dissapear. It's autumnal...very autumnal.

I think in portrait, with the lightest bit at the top, it is quite eerie. In portait the other way it's like a derelict building, your inside part of the building...the ceiling has come down and it's collapsed. I like it best in portrait with the light at the bottom right, it's like a lake with a reflection with sunlight or moonlight. That's rather good. It keeps changing. The image shows lots of depth...I can now see a red hooded person. It has a lot of aspects and feelings and images. It's very simple but multilayered.

Not a lot of sound. It's very peaceful, like a woodland or forest. Smell of autumn. Too spooky there is not a lot of sound.

There is a face in there, like a cat or a lion...there is definitely a face there. It's like looking at clouds now...I keep seeing different things. Smoke, mist, forest and now it's created a face!

There seems to be something of a reflection in the image when I'm holding it in landscape. There is a brighter patch in the top left corner and it seems like an image of a lake with a slight reflection of these two dark bars across the middle and there is a dappled cloudy sun in the sky. Portrait with the brighter bit in the bottom left quadrant there is this beautiful heart that appears in a blush colour. This seems like an early colourised xray, maybe because of the heart, the brighter patch could actually be something more malignant like a shadow or a tumour. It's calming but there could be darker undertones to it. I do like the image.

Turning it the other way, it seems like a cut off image with the source of light outside the picture and what you see in the river, in the ripples, is all that we see. I like that. I think I prefer it in portait with the light in the right upper quadrent...that heart shape has become a leaf or a bird. It's quite a calming, peaceful image...like the aftermath of something or a settling of something.

I agree that it's multi-layered. I keep seeing new things. You keep getting impressions, or little half pictures. It's very transient. Makes me think of Turner.

It does seem very still, despite all the movement in the image itself. Smell...taste...I don't know...goats cheese!? lol. Smell would be warm...it's not threatening. It's a comforting image. Sound wouldn't be offensive.

It makes me think of 'The fighting temeraire' by Turner. It could be one of the fireships. The aftermath the armada..it has got a wattery thing...with the reflection of the lake. It's definitely got an aftermath of violence past vibe about it.

In Portait I see a large tall tree. People at the base of the tree...possibly dancing. Landscape - rotated to the left. Sun in the top left and a reflection along the middle waterline.

I like it best in portait.

Colours - I love the autumnal colours on the ground around the base of the tree.

I like the dancing figures and the warmth of the picture.

It makes me think of forest scenes and dancers having fun - holidays and campfires.

Autumn forest in the morning. (Portrait)

Autumn landscape at sunrise with reflectsion in water (Landscape)

I preferred the portrait image. It makes me think of bright crisp autumn days, my favourite time of year.

I love it! Sounds - birdsong, leaves crunching. Taste - fruits (apples!) and nuts. Smell - Earthy and fruity. (apples).

Imagining the forest creatures that live there, birds, squirrels etc.

Loved it! It is calm and beautiful. The colours are rich and very reminiscent of Autumn.
